Types of Toyota Keys We Replace
Toyota has used several distinct key technologies over the years, and knowing which one your vehicle uses matters a great deal for replacement. Older Toyotas — think late-1990s Camrys, Corollas, and Tacomas — used basic metal keys with no embedded electronics, making replacement straightforward and fast. Starting in the early 2000s, Toyota began equipping most models with transponder keys: the key blade contains a micro-chip in the plastic head that must be programmed to communicate with your vehicle's immobilizer system. Without proper programming, a correctly-cut key will simply turn in the ignition and the engine won't start.
More recent Toyota models — including Camry, RAV4, Highlander, Tundra, and Prius lines from roughly 2010 onward — use remote head keys (blade plus integrated key fob) or fully proximity-based Toyota Smart Keys, also known as push-to-start or keyless entry fobs. These Smart Keys use rolling-code encryption and require dealer-level programming tools to pair with your vehicle. Our technicians carry professional-grade OBD programming devices that handle Toyota's immobilizer protocols for all these systems, so we can complete the job at your location rather than requiring you to tow your car anywhere.
